Case Study

Case Study: whimsical wallpapers from Barneby Gates

the Case Study series at The Unexpected Chic

As many of you probably know, the crazy intense season of design shows is coming up here in London! From mid-September onward it is a non-stop circus of amazing inspiration with The London Design Festival, Decorex, 100% Design, Tent London, Designersblock, and the National Home Improvement Show, just to name a few.

For those of you can’t be there (myself included, I’ll be attending an event in Germany!), the exhibitors, products and conference sessions are still a rich bank of information and creative stimuli that we can feast our design-hungry minds on! There is an unbelievable amount of coverage in the press with all sorts of magazines and blogs chatting away about the amazing things going on at these shows, so you can have almost as much fun reading about it from home and exploring online as you would attending!

I’ll be writing a series of show previews during the next few weeks leading up to the shows, so be sure to visit often to catch all the news and highlights!

One name that’s caught my eye in the whirlwind of words and pictures surrounding these events is Barneby Gates. Vanessa Barneby is a British designer who has an impressive CV having worked as a stylist and editor for House & Home and British Vogue, respectively. Her colleague Alice Gates studied Fine Arts and has worked worldwide as a narrative painter, often inspired by fashion illustrations and featuring in many international publications.

All of Barneby Gates’ papers are printed on a traditional press in the west of England to achieve a hand-painted quality. Their wallpaper designs walk the line perfectly between historic and contemporary, whimsical and graphic. I love how they play with silhouettes and scale, and mix popping colours with subtle metallics to make a look that is really eye-catching and unique.

I’ve chosen a few of my favourites to share with you here:

Aren’t they wonderful! Be sure to check out Barneby Gates’ website for more information on their traditional processes, they are really interesting! And of course, seek out the company’s stand at Decorex if you’re going!

Enjoy your weekend everyone! xx
